"It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America."
Barack Obama, Nov. 4, 2008 Chicago
I would like to start a conversation, to seek an explanation, to spur curiosity and to challenge resistant thoughts that dwell in all of us. Despite your views on the current political scene in America and the plate set before us around the world. We as a people & a nation have taken a bold step forward and have booked marked the pages of history for at least a century, if not a millennia.
Change has indeed come to the America, but not embodied in one single entity, not in one person, not in one political leader. Change has come in the conversations. Those that happen in quiet places, between coworkers or best girlfriends. Conversations between parents and children, around local hotel bars between complete strangers. Conversations that occur in larger spaces like classrooms, boardrooms, subway platforms and social gatherings. Conversations that are broadcast from CNN, BBC, Face book and Twitter. Conversations make change possible.
So lets start a conversation.
What can we, I, he, she, them, us, you say,.... to make change continue? Is it enough to be satiated by our historical actions accomplished on Nov. 4th? That is important, but...that is history. What we, I, he, she, them, us, you,..... can do, is to individually keep the momentum of change in motion.
So what is change? I have no ideal. Change can as ambitious as a toddlers attempts to walk into his fathers arms for the first time. Change can be as simple as to actually introduce yourself to person you see daily on your commute to work. Change can be something to improve the world. Change can also be something to improve your community.
The conversation can be with yourself, a family member, a coworker, your drinking buddy, a stranger or even your BFF (best friends forever or best friends fucking). But in order for change to take place, a conversation must too.
In the reaming days till January 20, 2009, I challenge you to start a conversation.
One conversation, gave us HOPE, PROGRESS and the strength to changeYES WE CAN to yes we did. I can only imagine where your conversation will take us.
On January 20th at 9pm - bring your conversation and dancing shoes to the Walnut Room. In the wake of a dream fulfilled, celebrate, dance, laugh and share your conversation with others.
On January 20th - we not only mark history as a Sundae family, we sow the seeds of change in the fertile fields of conversations.
I am excited to have a shit load of conversations that night.
