Million Dollar Disco
Al Kent was born in Scotland. His father was an avid record collector and had a cabinet full of them. And Whisky. Everything from Abba and Elvis to the Glitter Band and Buddy Holly was in there. What a load of shit they were.
In 1976 Al ran away from home to live in New York. Here, at the age of 8 he started attending the Loft and hanging out with Nicky Siano and a whole bunch of cool New York DJs with Italian names. In 1978 he was arrested for possession of PCP while guesting at Better Days with Tee Scott and deported back to Glasgow, where his dad was now getting into a bit more David Essex. He was shit too.
So Al opened his own club in Glasgow, based on his experiences in New York. With his pocket money he flew Richard Long over to kit it out and had Walter Gibbons DJ at the opening party.
Since then he's bought lots of records, done the deejaying in lots of places, and recorded an orchestra too.
Al is currently working with Lynn from Ebonycuts on a time machine. This project should be completed soon, at which point the two will travel back in time and buy lots of records.

the melting pot nyc
Historically, the metaphor of a “Melting Pot” was coined by the playwright Israel Zangwill, in his 1908 production, which described the integration and absorption of immigrants of varied European descent into mainstream American society at the turn of the century. At the time, this assimilation was positively viewed as a means of improving one’s social and economic position in the world.
The Melting Pot NYC (TMP) challenges this traditional definition. TMP celebrates the diversity of influences that give shape to New York City’s artistic and cultural landscape. TMP provides a context for underrepresented artists of various ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds and disciplines to create their own unique and collaborative stew. Each Melting Pot venue invites a variety of artists to interpret a common theme in terms of their individual and cultural perspective. The result is a unique synergy in which the artists and audience members share in the creation of interactive and complex art experience. It is the implicit belief of The Melting Pot founders that this kind of participatory arts venue provides both the artists and the audience with a depth of shared experience that fosters cultural understanding and tolerance. Our target community is the “melting pot” of NYC. The rich fabric of local and international artists, musicians, poets, filmmakers, dancers, designers and their audience, form a unique community, which is specific to New York. The Melting Pot NYC celebrates this varied and dynamic mix of individuals. The Melting Pot events create a unique composition of cultures and art forms that will ultimately appeal to a broad constituent of viewers and participants of all ages, races, and socio-economic audiences.
The Melting Pot (TMP) serves a culturally and socio-economically diverse community. This diversity is reflected in the cultural backgrounds and wide array of artistic professions that form the Melting Pot’s founding team (see attached biographies). One facet of the TMP’s mission is to provide a venue for underrepresented artists of all disciplines and races.
The Melting Pot is a labor of love and inspiration. The most brilliant and creative people in the Arts are presented monthly. The artists are truly masters of their disciplines and their presentations are unique. The spectrum ranges from a subway station tap-dancer, to an 8-piece samba band, to an artist whose canvas is stained-glass. Beautiful music is presented that touches the soul and moves the body. There is no limit to what can be conveyed.
With that said, The Melting Pot NYC does not only give opportunities to talented artists to showcase their talents to a wider audience but also participate and take action on social and humanitarian issues. The Melting Pot NYC is not only a monthly party, but a collective whose goal is to enrich lives through events, activism and education.

To present this artistic mélange with a focus on benefiting the community intellectually, spiritually and physically.

beats and words
welcome to beats & words.
please take a stroll to the "mixes" section for some new tunes. i recently updated two mixes..one is all new disco and the other is all soul n funk music. i hope you can dig them.
my group, drrtyhaze got signed to Tirk Records out of london in 2007. Since then we have released our first EP with Tirk called 'Beat to def'. We also released a remix on Airtight Records. The remix is a new mix of Mental Overdrive's 'Run to the hills' originally created by one of the greatest heavy metal bands ever, Iron Maiden. Both the first release and the remix have been getting rave reviews and spins from dj's such as Rub n Tug, Harvey and Prins Thomas.
doug gomez and i are steadily building some really amazing songs right now and the feedback we've been receiving has been really great. please pick up our releases and play them really, really loud! :)
if you are in the city and wanna rock, you can find me at flute in midtown every thursday night and mannahatta every friday night playing soul, funk, disco, punk funk, and rock. other than that, ill be in the studio...

smooth agent records
In the Beginning
In the year 2000, a fateful meeting brought together Sean Smith and Arturo Alarcon. In this chance meeting they bonded immediately after discovering the coincidental views they shared on the House Music scene in Chicago. After working together on various successful projects, Arturo and Sean decided to incorporate their friendship by establishing Smooth Agent Records.
The Vision
The basis of Smooth Agent Records is to publish timeless House Music. A true House record is one that is reminiscent of it's Chicago roots. With the deteriorating state of House Music in Chicago, Smooth Agent Records could not have been established at a better time.
Committed to Excellence
Smooth Agent Records was created as a platform not only for Sean and Arturo but other underexposed and talented record producers. Not to be underestimated for being independent and non-mainstream. Quality production, sound and materials are to be essential in each Smooth Agent Records release.

handz on radio
This web site along with Handz On internet radio was created for all those who love deep, soulful house music. Whether it's vocal house, gospel house, Latin house or Afro beat, if it's soulful we are playing it no matter what language is being spoken. House music listeners have turned to the internet to quench their thirst for the music. Since house music is hard to come by on the radio now days, at least in the U.S. (Europe is holding it down it), we created a place where the music can be heard 24/7 mixed by real Deejays with 5 hours a week of live broadcasts.
New house music is coming out daily from the U.S., Europe, Canada, Japan. The problem is that most of the music is in vinyl format and never reaches your local music stores. House music is bought almost exclusively by Deejays. This means that if you want to hear the latest music, you have to get to the club. This site is for the individual who can't get to the club for whatever reason, but still wants to hear good house music. Or if you can get to the club, we will get you warmed up for the dance floor.
All music is broadcast or recorded straight from the turntables to the computers and out to the internet. We use 98% vinyl for all mixes. Every now and then we may mix in a CD if we don't have that particular song on vinyl.
Lastly, for those who are not familiar with house music and its origins, we strongly suggest you view "Pump Up The Volume", a documentary produced by the BBC. It's about an hour long but worth every minute. Much thanks to G-man at DeepHouse Page for providing this clip.

Soul Stream networks radio
Soulstream's mandate was simple when it launched in May 2004: to create a radio station that would play music not receiving its deserved exposure on North American commercial radio. Started by three friends and music professionals: Marco Marquez, formerly of Toronto's CHIN radio; Martino Lozej, acclaimed house producer and session keyboardist; and Adam "Suges" Sugar, celebrated Toronto deep house producer.
Since the network's inception however, the vision has become much more ambitious. With a minimum of 49 different countries tuning in each month, not only did the network quickly expand its broadcasting format to include more than house music, old school, funk, R&B, soul, hip hop, Latin music, and drum & bass, but also added regular shows from such diverse regions as Italy, Sweden, New York, and New Zealand.
Soulstream's mission to expose music has sent the Network down many different avenues, exploring different forms of media to exploit. This led to the very highly anticipated launching of Soulstream's record label SSR in the spring of 2006. With two of Canada's most sought-after producers of underground music at the helm of this project (Martino and Suges), and with the many talented DJs, producers, record label execs, and promoters already part of Soulstream's broadcasting branch, there is no doubt that the culmination of Soulstream's varied enterprises will be the focal point of underground culture emanating out of Canada.
